Buying a sofa is a big investment so choosing a fabric for your sofa to be upholstered in can be a very difficult decision. This is why at Camerich we have a range of over 90 fabrics and leathers to choose from, giving you the freedom to personalise your furniture as you please.

However, choosing a fabric is not just about the aesthetics. It is important to ensure that you are choosing good quality fabrics to have your furniture upholstered in.

What do you need to look for?

Fabrics are graded according to the fibres that they are made up of, which determine their durability, cost, colour preservation and how easy it is to maintain. Fibres can help you predetermine how the fabric will wear over time and other visual aspects such as the fading of colours or patterns in fabrics.

If you are going for patterned fabrics it is important to consider a few things. Printed on patterns are less durable than woven-in patterns. Sunlight can fade printed patterns (actually it can fade almost anything) as well as general usage over time – choose wisely!

Colour is also an important decision to make when choosing a sofa. A lot of people go for neutral fabrics that do not leave them restricted when moving to a new house or redecorating. However, at Camerich, we offer a solution of completely removeable covers (yes even off the frame!) in a variety of different fabrics and leathers.

Here our Freetown Sofa is shown upholstered in one of our neutral fabrics with a variety of cushions, making the sofa personal to the user, without committing to a bold colour on the sofa, which you could feel tired of over time. We offer the option of supplying your own fabric. This means you can still have our feather filled cushions and high quality sofas, but in your own style of fabric.

Our Lazytime sofa here is shown upholstered entirely in our Blossom fabric which adds a focal point to the room.

Overall, when choosing fabrics, it is important to ask yourself these three things:

1)      How will the fabric or leather age over time? Leather ages differently to fabric, so will you be happy with how it will be over time after everyday use?

2)      Yes it looks nice, but how does it feel when you sit on it?

3)      What is it made up of? Are you looking for a softly compiled fabric or firm one? At Camerich, we are able to help you with this. When visiting our showrooms, you can take away fabric and leather swatches, see how they look in your own space.

Feel that you need some advice on fabrics? Pop into one of our 6 showrooms and we'd be more than happy to source a fabric most suited to you.
